What is a Facelift?
A facelift is a surgical procedure designed to remove excess skin and lift sagging structures of the face and neck. At Barber Facial Plastic Surgery, facelift procedures are typically performed by Dr. Henry Barber in our AAAHC-certified operating room in Mobile, Alabama.
The goal of facelift surgery is to create a refreshed, more youthful appearance while maintaining natural facial features. Modern facelift techniques are designed to avoid the overly tight or unnatural appearance associated with older methods. Instead, today’s facelift enhances your existing facial structure while restoring a rejuvenated, balanced look.
Modern Facelift Techniques
Advancements in facial anatomy and surgical techniques have significantly improved facelift outcomes. Modern facelifts utilize a multilayered approach, addressing the deeper muscles, fat, and connective tissues of the face rather than simply tightening the skin.
As the face ages, supportive ligaments stretch due to gravity and time, leading to sagging of the cheeks, jawline, and neck. Facelift surgery works by reinforcing these structures and repositioning them closer to their original, youthful location. In select areas of the face and neck, underlying muscles are gently tightened to provide long-term support.
The result is a natural-looking facelift that restores facial contours without creating a pulled or artificial appearance. The focus is on lifting and supporting the face, not pulling the skin.

Where Are Facelift Incisions Placed?
Facelift incisions are carefully placed to minimize visible scarring and follow natural contours of the face. Incisions are typically made:
- Around the ear
- Within the hairline or scalp
- Under the chin (when neck lifting is included)
These incisions are designed to heal discreetly and are usually hidden within natural creases. Hairline position is generally preserved, allowing patients to wear their hair in a variety of styles.
For men, incision placement is adjusted to account for beard growth. Rather than placing incisions in the ear canal, which may cause beard hair to grow unnaturally, incisions are positioned along the natural beard line in front of the ear. This approach allows the incision to blend in as healing progresses.
Facelift Recovery & Downtime
Facelift recovery occurs in stages and varies from patient to patient.
Intermediate Recovery (4–6 weeks)
By this stage, most swelling has subsided, and signs of recent surgery are minimal. Many patients feel comfortable being photographed and resuming most normal activities.
Initial Recovery (10–14 days)
During the first stage, patients can expect visible swelling and bruising. Most individuals choose to limit social activities during this time. Makeup is typically permitted after 7 to 10 days.
Final Healing (6–12 months)
Internal healing and tissue settling continue during this period. Final results gradually become apparent as swelling fully resolves and tissues stabilize.
Deep Plane Facelift
A deep plane facelift is an advanced surgical technique that addresses the deeper layers of facial anatomy for longer-lasting, natural results. Unlike traditional facelifts that focus primarily on lifting the skin, the deep plane facelift repositions the underlying muscles, fat, and connective tissue as a single unit.
This approach allows for:
- Softening of deep nasolabial folds
- Restoration of cheek volume
- Improved jawline definition
- Correction of moderate to severe facial sagging
By working beneath the surface, the deep plane facelift produces a more natural rejuvenation without the tight or stretched appearance sometimes associated with skin-only techniques. This procedure is often recommended for patients seeking more comprehensive facial rejuvenation.
Facelift FAQs
Who is a good candidate for a facelift?
A facelift may be appropriate for individuals experiencing sagging skin, deep facial folds, jowls, or loss of definition in the jawline and neck. Ideal candidates are generally in good overall health, do not smoke, and have realistic expectations about surgical outcomes. A consultation with a board-certified facial plastic surgeon is the best way to determine whether a facelift is appropriate based on individual anatomy and goals.
How long do facelift results last?
Facelift results are long-lasting, but they do not stop the natural aging process. Most patients can expect their results to last several years, depending on factors such as skin quality, genetics, lifestyle, and the surgical technique used. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle and proper skin care can help preserve results over time.
Is a facelift combined with other procedures?
In some cases, a facelift may be combined with other facial procedures such as eyelid surgery, brow lift, or neck lift to achieve balanced facial rejuvenation. The decision to combine procedures depends on individual concerns and anatomy and is discussed during the consultation process.
